A Moment on the Hips-- a Lifetime on the Prescription

miami1.jpg - 8.21 K To many young men, AIDS is like cancer. It's just another disease. It's amazing to me. I have three youths right now, two are 16, one is 18, and they continue to bareback. They are peer educators. . . . They have said in discussion that they don't want to use condoms. They refuse. They know the risks. It's psychological. They need that love. They feel [using condoms] is a barrier for them to get that love. Their self-esteem is too low. They feel they can't make love and use protection at the same time.

Dale Ayres--Executive Director of GLBT Youth of Miami—"Many young men using AIDS Drugs as shield for unsafe sex"—by Steve Rothaus—The Miami Herald, September 9

Going to Hamburger Heaven?

A restaurant is more likely to kill me than a bathhouse. A hamburger and fries is more dangerous than a sex club.

Michael Petrelis—"In S.F.: Argument of the Species"—San Francisco Examiner, September 10

Gender Bender News

Doctors say the day when men can carry a pregnancy has moved a step closer after a woman gave birth to triplets - one of whom developed outside the womb.

Maxine Frith—"Male pregnancy is one step closer" --Newcastle Chronicle & Journal, September 11

Ban Same-Sex Marriage, Not Guns

gaymargeguns.jpg - 16.42 K Americans would rather ban marriages by homosexuals than magnums and handguns.

Americans would rather put sick people in prison for smoking marijuana than force all its citizens to register their revolvers.

Americans would rather hold the world record for state executions in a democracy, than confiscate a Colt 45.

Americans would rather ban sex education than six-guns.

Barry Brown— "Americans give up every right except the one that's most deadly"—The Miami Herald, September 7

Tolerant Bats and Balls Guys

It wouldn't have made a difference to me then and it doesn't bother me now.

NGLTF's Kerry Lobel: Driven by Her Brother's Suicide

As the task force's executive director, Lobel, openly lesbian since 19, is driven by the memory of her brother's tragic death. "I definitely dealt with it by putting every amount of time and energy I have into trying to create an environment where people can fully be themselves. It pushed me to say, I don't really care how you label yourself. I want to create a world where you can be yourself."

Deb Price— " Nonconformist Challenges Gay Leaders"--Detroit News, September 7

rickymartin1.jpg - 16.32 K Some of Us are Sick of You Too, Camille!

Pop conundrum of the summer: Are Ricky Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow the same person? Their tight, artificial, paper-doll smiles look like they were etched by the same syrupy fantasist -- Kathie Lee Gifford with PMS. God, I'm so sick of that pair!

The Emerald Isle: Going Pink

Belfast, a city traditionally thought of in terms of orange and green, is turning pink. Publicans in the city centre are enjoying a bonanza from record numbers of gay patrons.

The city now has three gay venues, and two others which hold a gay night each week. There are plans for a gay and lesbian cafe and a number of pubs are considering introducing gay nights in an effort to win a share of the pink pound.

Vincent Kearney--"Belfast pubs turn pink to cash in on gay scene" The Sunday Times, London, September 5

Al Gore's Divine Purpose

goreangels.jpg - 30.58 K Witness the pilgrim's progress of Al Gore. Though he has talked and written about his faith in the past—as have all his rivals—he has pumped up the volume big time as he seeks the Presidency. In late May he summoned reporters on the religion beat to break the news that he believes "the purpose of life is to glorify God." Four days earlier he had endorsed "charitable choice"—a concept coined by Senator John Ashcroft, a Pat Robertson acolyte, to siphon Federal dollars into religious institutions. More recently Mr. Gore hedged about the teaching of creationism—who would have thought the inventor of the Internet would believe that the earth was invented in seven days?—until an outcry from supporters led to a hasty retreat?

The Truth about the McLaughlin Group

McLaughlin's ego, always greater than seemed justified by his charm or achievements, swelled to enormous proportions. He behaved as if he could do the program with four clothing-store dummies.

Jack W. Germond— "Confessions of a McLaughlin Group Escapee"—Brill's Content, September
